Christmas is most definitely my favourite time of year. Everything about it is magical to me; the story of Baby Jesus, twinkling lights, the smell of freshly baked cookies, a beautifully decorated tree and family gathered around for a delicious turkey dinner are all reasons why this time of year is so special.
Growing up, we always had trips to see Santa, letters sent to the North Pole, Church Christmas concerts, dinners on Christmas Eve, listening to where Santa’s sleigh is being spotted on the radio and searching for Rudolph’s red nose in the sky. How can you not love this time of year!?
We have a lot of traditions and I am excited to continue them with my family and create some new ones with my little family.
Here are some traditions I look forward to every year.
November 25th is the day I finally allow myself to watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and then I continue on with Christmas with the Kranks, Home Alone 1 & 2, The Santa Claus, The Grinch with Jim Carry and Miracle on 34th Street. I must watch all of these movies at least twice before Christmas Eve or I feel like the holiday season is missing something. Weird I know but just humor me OK?!
Decorating Our Home
This also gets done on November 25th or sometime shortly after. Our tree gets put up, tinsel gets thrown around everywhere along with sparkles that seem to get stuck on everything and twinkling lights get put outside all while drinking hot cocoa and listening to some Michael Buble singing carols in the background.
Kid’s Christmas Party
This is a new tradition that Dana and I have started with Isla. My work puts on a party with crafts, music, snacks and a gift from the big man himself. She seemed to enjoy it more this year than last year…she wasn’t sleeping so I think that’s a win!
This is always a big deal and was started when I was just a wee babe. The whole family gets together for a huge turkey dinner and my dad’s ever popular potato balls, cocktails, exchanging of gifts and lots of laughs. It is something we all look forward to every year and we are excited to be able to continue it with Isla.
Christmas Morning is pretty self explanatory and will always be the best tradition. We open stockings, have Bailey’s and coffee, eat a late brunch, read the Christmas story and veg out the rest of the day with family. What could be more perfect?!
Things I Want To Start With My Family
Now that Dana and I have started a family of our own, of course there are some traditions that we want to start with Isla and our future little ones.
The Elf on the Shelf
Meeting Santa and his Reindeer
There is a place in Kingston called Riley’s Garden Centre and for one weekend in November they have Santa and some of his reindeer come for a visit. We took Isla this year and hope to enjoy it again next year.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!
