Before and After: Pictures in Parenting

I often find myself giggling and thinking back to what life was like not having a child. Remember when you could run out the door at a moments notice to pick something up from the grocery store, or when a friend called to ask you to meet them for drinks, you couldn’t say YES quickly enough?! Or remember when you could spend all morning sleeping in and then finish the day off by lying on the couch all afternoon catching up on your PVR?! Or when you could easily walk through the house at night without any lights on and you would never worry about stepping on a block or making something light up and say “A is for apple.” It really seems like forever ago, doesn’t it?!

I thought about how every aspect of my life has changed and I wanted to document it for you in pictures.

 ***
Do you remember when you could have white furniture, a hard-wooden coffee table
with sharp edges and a beautifully positioned pouf that was the perfect surface for your great great grandmothers throw that she purchased while backpacking in Italy? Ya me too! But now it looks something a little more like this!

Remember when you could draw yourself a nice bubble bath,
light a candle and just be with your thoughts?! I don’t either because I can’t get through all the toys to enjoy myself, I can’t keep candles burning around Isla and I can’t hear myself think for more than 2 seconds without being interrupted by “Mom, Mommy!”

Do you remember when your medicine cabinet use to be storage for all your expensive moisturizers (which you can’t afford anymore because diapers are more important), your 10 different shades of pink nail polish and all of your other girly items? Now it is over run with baby products, toothbrushes, and little people??! How did Cinderella get in there?!

I remember when I could open up a kitchen cupboard and see everything in front of me that I needed sitting ever so perfectly and in their place. Now my reflexes are really working overtime to catch the 3 plastic Veggie Tale cups that always seem to make their way to the floor because there is no room for anything. Now my cupboards are full of plastic bowls, plates and sippy cups in every colour of the rainbow!

Not long ago, Dana and I could sit back and relax, enjoy a wonderfully prepared dinner, drink some wine and even have dessert. Sometimes, dare I say we were able to go for dinner and enjoy ourselves on a patio somewhere. Now we are lucky to make it through even 5 bites of food without getting mashed potatoes thrown in our hair, or slipping on them and other assorted food that has been thrown all over the floor!

Would I change all this for anything in the world?! Heck no! Being a parent is so much more than crisp white linens, a floor you don’t slip on and sitting down to enjoy a full meal without interruptions. It’s about memories, new experiences and getting to raise a family.

It's the bits of lego everywhere for me…before kids, no lego. After, lego on the floor, lego in my shoes, lego everywhere!
Oh, and eating out is now more a test in survival than a relaxing time to eat hot food…take out is a good thing.
Oh, and one last one. Drive Thrus. Never used them sans kids, love them with kids.
