We are gluten free in this household. My husband not so much but Isla is gluten free and I try to keep it out of my diet 98% of the time. The gene runs in our family. Both my mom and sister have big problems with it. My Nana recently got tested and found out that she has a sensitivity to it and that the gene is a part of both sides of our family, so needless to say I try to stay away from it and I want the same for Isla. I myself feel much better when I don’t eat it so it’s a pretty simple decision for me to keep the stuff out of the house.
Eating gluten free has really come a long way, even in the last 5 years. There were never the choices that we have now and there were never companies putting out great products for great prices. My husband will sit down and eat gluten free pasta with us because he knows it’s better for him and he can’t even tell the difference. We try to keep things fairly simple around here; fruits, vegetables, and protein but it is really nice to have snack items that are especially great for a toddler to eat and that are great to take on the go.
After many years of trying different types of products, these are my main staples that will always show up on every grocery list and that everyone loves.
Catelli Gluten Free Pasta – This stuff is the best and made with quinoa, corn, and white and brown rice. You would never know it’s gluten free, Isla loves it (as do we) and you can always find it somewhere for around $2 a box. They offer spaghetti, linguine, macaroni, penne and fusilli noodles and always cook into the perfect pasta.
Irresistibles Gluten Free Pizza – Pretty happy with this stuff. It’s been hard to find a gluten free pizza when you just don’t have the time to make one. They have a pepperoni and vegetable variety that only cost $6.99. Best part is that it bakes up like a regular old pizza; same size and everything.
Taste of Life Brown Rice Tortillas – We always keep these in the freezer just to have on hand. Great for tacos, quesadillas and a quick breakfast of Nutella and peanut butter. These are one of the few tortillas I have found that don’t completely break apart as you roll them.
Quaker Crispy Minis – You can buy these in a rice cake or chips. Both are delicious and great for snacking. Isla loves a plain rice cake with peanut butter on them and we all can’t get enough of the ketchup flavoured chips.
Breton Crackers – One thing I have had a hard time finding is a good cracker UNTIL Breton brought out there delicious gluten free version. Buttery and delicious just like their regular crackers. Best part is that they don’t charge a different price for them. Win win!
Great Value Animal Crackers and Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies – Walmart came out with these and I am glad they did. For only $2.27 you get a box of 6 packets. Perfect for travel, lunches and a quick snack. We don’t keep them around to often because as you may guess the sugar content is a bit extreme but a great little treat none the less.
Honey Nut Chex – A great breakfast option if you are rushing around in the morning and a great snack to take on the go. You will not find a kid that doesn’t love them…gluten free or not!
Gluten free has come along way. Hopefully some of the items on our list will help you add some new stuff to your cupboards, whether you are completely new to it or trying to find new items. Is there anything I should be trying that may not be on the list? Always looking to try new things! Comment below.
