My Turquoise Home

A Reflection On 2016 & Hopes for 2017

2016 was a pretty incredible year. We added Nash to our family in April, sold our first house in the summer, moved to our new home in July, my little sister got married in August and Isla turned 3!  It was a busy year to say the least. I have been on maternity leave, parenting two children and learning how to keep a home and a family. I have been trying to grow my blog, start other projects on the side and create a new business venture that I hope to someday share with you. I have been trying to figure out motherhood, simplify my home and life and keep everyone happy and healthy. I can only imagine what the new year has in store for myself and my family.

What I Have Learned In 2016

Things don’t always have to be perfect. Your day doesn’t always need to be planned out. You don’t have to get out of your pyjamas and if you do yell at your kids, it’s ok. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Cereal can be served for dinner AND for breakfast.

Don’t overthink things. Making meals, preparing for a party, even grocery shopping shouldn’t be something you dread or complicate. Keep things simple in all aspects of life.

Having two kids is a lot harder then one. You do figure out a routine and a rhythm and the days do get easier. Lucky for me I smile twice as much now!

I would love another child. Maybe two more. Who knows, but I would definitely like one more. I can totally picture a third brother or sister for Isla and Nash. Lord willing we will be able to give them that.

I need to improve my time management skills. I have way to many dreams, to do lists and things I want to accomplish. I am trying a couple of methods this year and I will let you know how they work out.

It’s ok to ask for help. Home, life, kids, job, a question. Asking for help doesn’t mean you have failed. It only means that you have figured out what you need to do to get the job done.

My daughter is smarter then I am. If there is anything that has tested my strength and limits this year, it’s Isla. She is a fantastic human being for sure and mommas best friend but she is as stubborn and hardheaded as they come but also the sweetest and funniest little girl ever! She has taught me so much.

I am 100% obsessed with my baby boy. He has a piece of my heart that no one will ever have. He’s a mommas boy for sure and I can’t imagine my life without him.

Embrace every moment. Life is short and kids grow way to fast. Don’t sweat the small stuff, let them fall asleep on the couch or eat an apple in bed. 5 years down the road I know that I will be praying for these moments again.

My Hopes for 2017

I truly hope to accomplish my business goals. I hope that they will allow me to work from home with a job that I love and am passionate about. That would be my ultimate goal and that’s what I am working towards in 2017…a business of my own.

Focusing more on myself and time away with my husband is also important this year. We are not just mommy and daddy. We are Dana and Melissa who before kids used to have a pretty fantastic time together. This year we are going to carve out more time for just the two of us.

Continue to navigate through marriage and motherhood and strive for grace, not perfection.

Become a better cook for my family. Pasta just isn’t going to cut it anymore.

Ultimately, I want to enjoy every moment, big or small, good and bad and focus on all of the wonderful things that I have in my life. I also pray and hope for continued health and happiness for my family.

Happy New Year!
